  • Sword Art Online

A close contender to RPG-inspired anime, Sword Art Online is one of the most popular and recognized shows in this category. Set in 2022, the story follows Kirito, a gamer eagerly waited for the release of the titular game, Sword Art Online. Using hyperreal and immersive virtual reality technology, the game becomes more and more real as the 10,000 players discover the terrifying truth about the game.

This show was aired back in 2012 by the animation studio A-1 Pictures. During its run, it has 25 episodes which adapted the first 4 novels of the light novel Sword Art Online by Reki Kawahara. With such similarities to Grimgar, you definitely have to check this series out (if you haven’t already).

  • Log Horizon

Another similar anime is Log Horizon. In this show, online fantasy RPG Elder Tale is popular across the globe. However, the release of its latest expansion pack called Novasphere Pioneers changed the game for thousands of players. The reason? They were trapped inside the game without the ability to log out. Socially awkward Shiroe is one of the gamers who are now stuck in the game and must form alliances to survive.

Just like Haruhiro and his motley crew, Shiroe gathers a group of players with varied backgrounds and skills. This show ran from 2012 to 2013 with 25 episodes. Just like many animated series, Log Horizon is based on a manga of the same name.

  • No Game No Life

In the same theme as the first two, No Game No Life offers a story that involves RPGs. It follows the story of siblings Sora and Shiro, both online gamers. However, these two are not ordinary gamers as they are the people behind the legendary duo called “Blank.”

With their reputation as illustrious gamers, the two perceive the real world as a simple game but all this changed when they were thrust into Disboard, a game world where they encounter the God of Games, Tet. Now, they must defeat Tet and become the new gods of Disboard.

  • Btooom!

Lastly, you might want to check out Btoom! a series that is closely similar to Grimgar. Unemployed gamer and Japan’s Btoom! top player wakes up on an island with only a bag of bombs and a green crystal embedded in his hand. Without any memory of how this happened, he realized that he is in the game world of Btoom! and must now fight as he is met by animosity from other players.

The wait may be long but there is no need to fret as years of waiting is typical in the anime industry.
